Designing SkyWars and Spleef Maps That Play Well

Two classic minigames, two very different design problems. How to lay out a fair SkyWars and build a Spleef arena that stays tense to the last block.

Bed Wars gets a lot of attention, but SkyWars and Spleef are just as beloved and far quicker to set up. They sit at opposite ends of the design spectrum: SkyWars is about scattered islands and loot, Spleef is about a single shared floor. Understanding what makes each fair is the key to a map people actually want to replay.

SkyWars: islands, loot, and the void

In SkyWars every player (or small team) spawns on their own small island floating in the void, with chests of random gear. There are no generators and usually no pre-built bridges — you fight over a central island of better loot, or bridge to opponents and push them off. Matches are short and lethal, so balance comes from symmetry and loot fairness: every starting island should be the same shape with the same chest tier, and the centre should be equally reachable from all of them.

  • Identical starting islands placed in a ring around a richer centre.
  • Chest loot tables tuned so no spawn is luckier than another.
  • The void as the main threat — knockback and positioning decide fights.
  • Short sightlines between islands so rushing is risky but possible.

Spleef: one floor, lots of tension

Spleef inverts the idea: everyone stands on a single breakable floor — usually snow or wool — suspended over a pit of lava or void. Players dig the floor out from under each other with fast shovels; fall through and you're out; last one standing wins. The design challenge is the floor itself. Too small and games end in seconds; too large and they drag. A circular or square arena with a clear rim, a single floor layer, and a deadly pit below is all you need.

Shared rules that keep both fun

  • A lobby and countdown so everyone starts together.
  • A kit handed out on spawn (a fast shovel for Spleef; starter gear for SkyWars).
  • A clear out-of-bounds rule — the void or lava does the refereeing.
  • A one-command start so a host can launch a round instantly.

Mine Mod AI ships tuned builders for both: a themed, symmetric SkyWars-style arena and a snow-over-lava Spleef floor with a shovel kit and a one-command start — and because they're composed from the same primitives as every other mode, you can describe variations ('team Spleef', 'mega SkyWars') and still get a valid, playable map.

Build it without the busywork

Mine Mod AI turns a plain-English description into a ready-to-install Minecraft datapack or Bedrock add-on — version-correct and free to try.
