How to Make a Minecraft Mod: Choose a Format, Build and Test

A practical creation workflow for Java datapacks, Bedrock add-ons and Fabric source projects, with example prompts and checks before installing.

Start with one observable change

Write a small acceptance check before generating: for example, kill a zombie and confirm its loot changed. An idea such as a complete fantasy world hides many independent mechanics. Start with one mechanic, learn what files it creates, then expand after a successful test.

Use a concrete trigger, subject and effect. 'Make zombies drop diamonds' names all three. A creature's model, its attacks and its loot are separate requirements; naming a creature does not establish all of them.

Pick the format your game can load

  • ▸Java datapack: data files and functions installed inside a world. Suitable for supported recipes, loot, rules and command-based systems.
  • ▸Java resource pack: visuals installed in resourcepacks. It does not create arbitrary gameplay behavior.
  • ▸Bedrock add-on: behavior/resources and optional scripts, with manifest dependencies. Check device import support and world activation.
  • ▸Fabric source project: Java source for a pinned toolchain. Compile it before installing a jar with matching Fabric Loader and API.

A no-code first experiment

Open the datapack maker and try 'make zombies drop diamonds'. Inspect the actual summary and entity loot-table file. A loot override replaces that table's behavior; it is not a newly modeled zombie. The tool's example inventory provides the precise generated paths rather than asking you to guess the version's folder names.

Download the output and read README. Install it in a copied world on the selected version, run /reload and /datapack list enabled, then perform your acceptance check. Test alongside existing packs only after the isolated test passes.

If the request is unsupported

A refusal is useful evidence about the current feature boundary. Narrow the request or choose a different format; do not treat a renamed fallback as success. Advanced arbitrary Java behavior requires a development workflow, and Mine Mod AI's Fabric exporter is limited to supported custom item projects.

Keep a reproducible release record

  • ▸Record the exact prompt, game edition and target version.
  • ▸Keep the generated README, manifest or pack.mcmeta and file inventory.
  • ▸Note the test world, controls used, observed result and any errors.
  • ▸Back up before changing Minecraft versions or combining packs.
  • ▸Share claims about what you tested rather than claiming universal compatibility.

Build it without the busywork

Mine Mod AI turns a plain-English description into a ready-to-install Minecraft datapack or Bedrock add-on — version-correct and free to try.
